Apple has introduced iOS 18.2 as a public beta, allowing users to test new AI-powered features on their devices. Key additions include the Genmoji app, which creates custom emojis, the Image Playground for AI-generated visuals, and enhanced Siri functionality that integrates ChatGPT, enabling the assistant to handle a broader range of tasks. The new update also introduces Visual Intelligence, allowing users to identify objects and locations through the iPhone 16 camera.
These AI enhancements, collectively branded as "Apple Intelligence," aim to bring advanced language model technology to Apple’s ecosystem. With Apple Intelligence, Siri can assist with writing and proofreading across applications, offer more insightful responses, and create images, among other improvements. Additionally, Apple Intelligence opens new possibilities for third-party app developers, who will soon be able to integrate these AI features into a range of applications, including file management, photos, and word processing.
Despite these innovations, access to certain AI tools, such as some image-generation features, requires joining a waitlist. Users must first enable Apple Intelligence, which is not activated by default, before applying for additional features. Apple has not specified wait times but cautions that availability may be limited during the beta period. This controlled rollout is partly due to safety concerns, as Apple works to ensure responsible usage and scalable access.
Other devices, including iPads, Macs, and Apple TVs, have also received public beta updates, with iPadOS 18.2, macOS Sequoia 15.2, and tvOS 18.2 bringing similar AI functionality.
Earlier, Apple launched foundational AI features, like Writing Tools and revamped notification summaries, in iOS 18.1, marking the company’s continued focus on integrating AI tools across its product ecosystem.
