OpenAI has extended the Advanced Voice Mode of its ChatGPT tool to web browsers, enabling users to have voice-based interactions with the AI directly from their browser. Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, shared this update on X (formerly Twitter).

This feature, designed to make conversations with ChatGPT more natural and engaging, is now available to paying users, including subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Teams, or Edu plans. The rollout for web users follows its initial introduction in ChatGPT’s iOS and Android apps in September.

Advanced Voice Mode leverages OpenAI’s GPT-4o audio capabilities to facilitate real-time, conversational interactions. It enhances communication by recognizing non-verbal cues, such as speaking speed, and can even respond with varying emotional tones.

To use this feature on the web, users can click the Voice icon at the bottom-right corner of the ChatGPT prompt window and grant microphone access to their browser. Once activated, the interface displays a blue orb to indicate the voice mode is active.

Users can choose from nine distinct voice options, each with a unique tone and personality. For example, the "Arbor" voice is described as “easygoing and versatile,” while "Ember" is “confident and optimistic.”

Currently, only paying subscribers have access to Advanced Voice Mode, but OpenAI plans to extend the feature to free users in the coming weeks. Free users will receive a monthly preview, while subscribers on Plus and Teams plans are subject to daily usage limits, which OpenAI adjusts periodically. Notifications are provided when users approach their remaining time limit for the day.

This expansion is part of OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to make AI interactions more accessible and intuitive for its growing user base.
